Rain halts triangular final

NAIROBI: Rain halted play in the triangular one-day international tournament final between Australia and Pakistan on Saturday.

The rain started falling in the seventh over of Australia's innings with the world champions, chasing 228 for victory, at 46 for one.

After a 40-minute delay, the Australians moved on to 67 runs for one before rain again stopped play again in the ninth over. Australia had lost Adam Gilchrist in the first over, bowled by Wasim Akram for a duck.

Captain Ricky Ponting was on 29 runs from 33 deliveries, including four fours and one six. Matthew Hayden was on 20 off 22 balls, including three fours.

Pakistan, who won the toss and elected to bat, scored 227 all out in their 50 overs.

Five-wicket Gillespie holds nerve as Pakistan struggle

NAIROBI: Australia, fired by five Jason Gillespie wickets, took a stranglehold on the triangular one-day tournament final against Pakistan on Saturday.

Only a late flurry from Abdur Razzaq, who smashed 59 off 43 balls, helped Pakistan post a defensible total of 227 in their 50 overs. Gillespie took the spotlight for the right and wrong reasons, taking five wickets but conceding 70 runs in his 10 overs.

Pakistan looked out of the game at 55 for four after opting to bat, Gillespie coming up with two key wickets in the 10th over as opener Saeed Anwar was caught behind and Inzamam-ul-Haq was trapped lbw for a three-ball duck.

But Misbah-ul-Haq shored up the innings with a 61-run stand for the fifth wicket with Shoaib Malik and a 42-run partnership with Razzaq before he fell for 50 off 74 balls, leaving Pakistan on 158 for six with just over six overs left.

All-rounder Razzaq, however, provided some glorious fireworks at the death. The 48th and 50th overs from Gillespie provided a microcosm of his day.

The first of those, which took nine deliveries to complete, cost 24 runs and included the wicket of Rashid Latif, two no-balls, one wide which went to the boundary and a six and two consecutive fours off Razzaq's bat.

Glenn McGrath -- whose second ball of the game was hit for six by Shahid Afridi -- then conceded 16 runs off the 49th over, Razzaq slamming two sixes over long on and long off, before Gillespie showed his mettle by accepting the challenge of bowling the final over of the innings.

Razzaq was run out, Wasim Akram caught behind off a slogged top edge and Waqar Younis bowled off the final delivery of an over costing just a single.

Razzaq's innings included 38 in boundaries -- three sixes and five fours. All-rounder Shane Watson conceded 26 runs off his 10 overs, while fast bowler Brett Lee took two for 38.

Pakistan lost twice to Australia in the tournament's group stage but reached the final with victories over Kenya.
