Klusener fails to save SA again as Aussies cruise to victory

CENTURION: South Africa lost the second match of the seven-match here at SuperSport Park in Centurion as Australia sailed to victory by 45 runs. Chasing 227 runs to win the match and square the series, South Africa, aided by a brilliant run-a-ball knock of 59 from Lance Klusener, were bowled out for 181 runs in the 47th over. The top-order batsmen failed for the second time in the series and it took some gutsy batting from the late order batsmen to restore some pride in the South African line up.

The hosts scored 53 runs for the loss of four wickets in their first 15 overs but lost wickets at regular intervals against the Australian bowling attack, which bowled with fire and never let the Proteas settle once. Although Klusener blasted the Australians to all parts of the ground, his late attack fell 45 runs short of the target.

Earlier, South African skipper Shaun Pollock took four wickets for 32 runs to help his side restrict Australia to 226 runs for the loss of eight wickets. Only four Australians managed to reach the double figures with recalled Jimmy Maher top scoring with a sedate 95. He featured in two partnerships - for the second wicket with Matthew Hayden (38 runs off 60 balls), he scored 85 runs while with Damien Martyn (42 runs off 50 balls), he added 93 runs for the fourth wicket. South Africa bowled and fielded pretty well today and apart from Pollock, who took four wickets, Nicky Boje (2/37) and Roger Telemachus (2/42) also ended up as wicket takers.

Jimmy Maher was declared Man of the Match for his brilliant batting. The two teams will now play each other on 27th March at Potchefstroom.

Australia is leading the seven-match series 2-0.

Dippenaar, Boucher bring hope with gutsy batting

CENTURION: South African batsmen Boeta Dippenaar and wicket-keeper Mark Boucher brought the hosts back into the match with gutsy batting after the hosts lost four wickets for 45 runs in 12 overs against Australia in the second One-day International match here at SuperSport Park in Centurion.

Dippenaar (21 not out off 50 balls) and Mark Boucher (15 not out off 38 balls) are batting sensibly against a disciplined Australian attack and had, at the conclusion of the 25 overs, had taken the score to 79 runs for the loss of four wickets. They now have to score 148 more runs to win the match in the remaining 25 overs at an asking rate of 5.92 runs per over to win the match and square the series. On the other hand, the Aussies require six more wickets to earn a 2-0 lead in the seven-match series.

Australia remain on top as hosts lose early wickets

CENTURION: South African openers Gary Kirsten and Herschelle Gibbs failed to provide their side an opening stand and by the tenth over of the innings, they both had returned to the pavilion against Australia in the second One-day International match here at SuperSport Park in Centurion.

Chasing 227 runs to win the match and square the series, the hosts lost Gibbs in the fifth over when after scoring five runs, he was caught by Nathan Hauritz off Glenn McGrath. Gary Kirsten, who scored 21 runs, was dismissed in the eighth over while Jacques Kallis followed him in three overs later. They both scored 21 and 14 runs and were caught by Australian skipper Ricky Ponting off Jason Gillespie and Glenn McGrath respectively. Jonty Rhodes, regarded as a one-day specialist batsman, failed to score and was adjudged leg before to Gillespie in the twelfth over.

With just Boeta Dippenaar (9 not out off 21 balls), Mark Boucher (3 not out off 6 balls), Shaun Pollock and Lance Klusener to bat for them, the hosts are in trouble. For Australia, Glenn McGrath has taken 2/14 off his seven overs while Jason Gillespie's figures at the end of his first seven overs are 2/37.

South Africa, who have scored 53 runs for the loss of four wickets in the first 15 overs, now have to score 174 more runs to win the match in 35 remaining overs at an asking rate of 4.97 runs per over, otherwise the tourists would take the lead of the seven-match series 2-0.

Pollock helps SA restrict Australia to 226

Only four Australians managed to reach the double figures with recalled Jimmy Maher top scoring with a sedate 95. He featured in two partnerships - for the second wicket with Matthew Hayden (38 runs off 60 balls), he scored 85 runs while with Damien Martyn (42 runs off 50 balls), he added 93 runs for the fourth wicket.

Boje's brilliance reduces Australia to 133/3

CENTURION: Nicky Boje took two wickets off two balls in his first over as South Africa came back from behind to reduce Australia to 133/3 in 34 overs in the second One-day International match here at SuperSport Park in Centurion.

Australian top-order batsmen Matthew Hayden (38 runs off 57 balls) and Jimmy Maher added 85 runs for the second wicket after the departure of Gilchrist early but the introduction of Boje, who accounted for Hayden and Australian skipper Ricky Ponting in his first over, brought a halt to the Aussie progress.

The left-arm spinner first made Hayden chip the ball straight to Jonty Rhodes at short mid-wicket while his one-handed catch on the very next ball brought a rare first-ball duck for Ricky Ponting who has fared badly as a batsman in his first two outings as Steve Waugh's successor.

At the conclusion of 34 overs, Australia had scored 133 runs for the loss of three wickets. Jimmy Maher, playing instead of Michael Bevan, went to his half century from 87 balls and was batting at 66 not out, which came off 116 balls and included eight hits to the boundary.

Damien Martyn who has scored 13 runs off 21 balls was supporting him. For South Africa, Boje emerged as the most successful bowler as he had taken 2/14 in his first five overs.

Australia continue to dominate despite Gilchrist's failure

CENTURION: Australian top-order batsmen Matthew Hayden (21 not out off 40 balls) and Jimmy Maher (31 not out off 59 balls) continued to score runs freely after losing Gilchrist early in the second One-day International of the seven-match series against South Africa here at SuperSport Park in Centurion.

After being put to bat, the tourists lost Adam Gilchrist cheaply for the second time in the series. The Australian vice captain scored seven runs and was dismissed when in the third over of the match, in order to hit Shaun Pollock over the top, he holed out to Gary Kirsten at mid-on.

Sensible batting from Hayden and Maher afterwards brought the Aussies back into the match which would have gone the South African way had Australia lost one more wicket.

At the conclusion of the 18th over, Australia had scored 62 runs for the loss of one wicket. With Ponting, Lehmann and Martyn still to bat, the tourists might be looking to score in excess of 250.
