Sri Lanka crush Aussies to reach final

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka reached the final of the ICC Champions Trophy on Friday after crushing World Cup holders Australia by seven wickets with a comprehensive 10 overs to spare.

The hosts were never in trouble after their spinners skittled Ricky Ponting's side for 162 on a dry pitch after opting to bat.

The collapse, sparked by part-time bowler Aravinda de Silva, was all the more dramatic after Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden had begun with an explosive 49-run stand inside seven overs only to be both dismissed within three balls.

Off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan ended with three lower-order wickets for 26 while Shane Warne top-scored for Australia with just 36. Skipper Sanath Jayasuriya (42), Kumar Sangakkara (48) and Marvan Atapattu, dismissed for 51 on the brink of victory, then made sure of an easy home success.

Sri Lanka, who last played Australia three years ago when also beating them in Colombo, will face India in Sunday's final.

Jubilant Sri Lanka spin out Australia for 162

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka's spinners, inspired by Aravinda de Silva, engineered an extraordinary turnaround to dismiss world champions Australia for 162 in their Champions Trophy semi-final on Friday.

Openers Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden hammered 49 runs inside the first seven overs from the seamers before the hosts, switching to spin, removed them both in three balls as four wickets tumbled for eight runs. The run flow dried up completely, with de Silva surprisingly playing the lead role ahead of key spinner Muttiah Muralitharan and taking the first wicket in a fine miserly spell as he extracted big turn from a dry wicket. De Silva's 10 overs cost 16 runs.

Australia's hopes of a revival fizzled out when skipper Ricky Ponting fell cheaply and Damien Martyn ran out Darren Lehmann for a duck before also getting run out himself.

Australia were bowled out with eight balls to spare. Muralitharan ended the innings with two wickets in two balls to claim three for 26 off 9.4 overs. The winners will play India in Sunday's final.
