Gibbs makes third century in a row

POTCHEFSTROOM, South Africa: Herschelle Gibbs struck 153 runs Thursday, as South Africa amassed 301 for eight wickets at the North West Stadium in the first of three one-day internationals against Bangladesh.

Gibbs' innings, which came off 130 balls, included 17 fours and three sixes.

He became only the third player, after Pakistanis Zaheer Abbas and Saeed Anwar, to score three consecutive one-day international centuries.

South Africa looked set to score about 320 runs while Gibbs was still at the wicket, but his dismissal started a slide that saw the home team lose five wickets in the final seven overs.

Gibbs appears to have matured almost overnight into South Africa's best batsman.

His previous hundreds came against Kenya and India in the ICC Champions' Trophy.

His ton against Bangladesh was his 10th in a one-day international and his highest, as South Africa helped itself to some ordinary Bangladeshi bowling.

Bangladesh's best bowling came from Tapash Baisya, who finished with three for 50 off his 10 overs.

Youngster Talha Jubair took four wickets, but conceded 64 runs.

The Bangladeshis will be hard pressed to score 302 to win under the lights in their innings.
