Aravinda puts SL on top with 20th Test century

COLOMBO: Veteran Aravinda de Silva cracked a robust 171 not out to put Sri Lanka in a strong position in the opening Test against Bangladesh here on Monday.

The 36-year-old middle-order batsman smashed 25 fours and one six in his 20th Test century as Sri Lanka reached 351-4 at tea on the second day in reply to Bangladesh's first-innings total of 161 at the Saravanamuttu Stadium.

Skipper Sanath Jayasuriya was the other not-out batsman on 51. Aravinda led a Sri Lankan recovery with his solid 194-ball knock after three wickets had fallen in the opening five overs.

The hosts were struggling at 56-3 before Aravinda added 150 for the fourth wicket with Kumar Sangakkara (75) and 145 for the unbroken fifth with his skipper.

Aravinda raced to his hundred with attacking shots, pulling and driving left-arm spinner Enamul Haque through the covers for two successive fours.

He then lofted the spinner over mid-wicket in the next over to reach his century. The experienced batsman received valuable support from Sangakkara, who struck 12 fours in his eighth Test half-century before being caught short of the crease going for a third run in the post-lunch session.

The hosts were jolted by 16-year-old debutant fast bowler Talha Jubair, who grabbed two wickets in his lively opening three overs. Left-arm seamer Manjural Islam also chipped in as the hosts lost three wickets in the first five overs after having resumed at 32 for no loss.

Sangakkara and Aravinda then put the Bangladeshi attack in proper perspective with their big stand under pressure. Marvan Atapattu became Jubair's maiden Test victim in the day's opening over, inside-edging a delivery on to his stumps at his overnight score of 20.

The Bangladeshi teenager then bowled Mahela Jayawardene for no score, finding the gap between the bat and pad with an inswinger. Russel Arnold added 15 to his overnight score of 10 before being caught slashing at gully off Islam.

The tourists then had to wait for nearly a session for their next success as Aravinda consolidated his team's position with Sangakkara and Jayasuriya.
