Vandort completes maiden Test century

COLOMBO: Michael Vandort slammed his maiden Test century as Sri Lanka virtually batted Bangladesh out of the second and final Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club ground here on Tuesday.

The left-handed opener cracked 140 as Sri Lanka scored 263-2 declared at tea on the third day for an overall lead of 472 to enhance their chances of posting their 10th successive Test win at home.

Naveed Nawaz also made merry, remaining unbeaten with 78 on debut in a 172-run stand for the second wicket with Vandort. Veteran Hashan Tillekaratne was five not out.

Vandort, 22, struck one six and 16 fours in his 185-ball knock in only his second match as Bangladesh continued to struggle for wickets even against a second-string Sri Lankan side.

The hosts rested seven players from the squad that won the opening Test by a record innings and 196 runs but still managed to seize the initiative against Bangladesh, winless after 12 matches since gaining Test status in 2000.

Vandort made the most of the opportunity with a quality innings, driving and cutting firmly on the way to his well-deserved hundred.

The lanky opener celebrated by raising his cap and bat after reaching his century with a brace to fine-leg off off-spinner Habibul Bashar in the post-lunch session.

He was bowled leg-stump in the closing overs of the session, beaten by a slower one from seamer Talha Jubair.

Vandort, 18 overnight, reached his half-century in style by stepping out to drive off-spinner Fahim Muntasir through the covers for his seventh boundary.

He put Sri Lanka on course for a big total with an 80-run stand for the opening wicket with newcomer Jehan Mubarak, who contributed a solid 31 before being judged run out by TV umpire Peter Manuel.

The left-handed Mubarak made a diving attempt to regain his crease after being sent back by Vandort, but failed to beat a Tapash Baisya throw from mid-on to wicket-keeper Khaled Mashud.

That was the lone Bangladeshi success of the morning session as the hosts added 109 after resuming at 25 for no loss.

DAY TWO
July 29, 2002 -

Sri Lanka enjoy lead

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka, 209 runs ahead on first innings, were 25 for no wickets in their second innings at close on the second day of the second test on Monday.

Scores: Sri Lanka 373 all out (M.Vandort 61, S.Jayasuriya 85, T.Samaraweera 58) and 25-0. Bangladesh 164 all out (T.Baisya 52).

July 29, 2002 -
Gamage and Buddhika wreck Bangladesh

COLOMBO: Sri Lankan fast bowlers Chamila Gamage and Charitha Buddhika shared four wickets to trigger a Bangladeshi collapse in the second and final Test here on Monday.

Debutant Gamage took a wicket with his first ball in Test cricket to finish with 2-29 as Bangladesh crashed to 110-7 at tea on the second day in reply to Sri Lanka's 373 at the Sinhalese Sports Club ground.

The tourists still require 63 more runs to avoid the follow-on. Buddhika grabbed 2-18 and off-spinner Thilan Samaraweera 2-12 as a new-look Sri Lankan team tightened its grip on the match.

Newcomer Alok Kapali was the top-scorer with an unbeaten 35 in a Bangladeshi batting performance that proved feeble against both pace and spin. Gamage and Buddhika also gave a good account of themselves as batsmen, sharing an entertaining 64-run stand for the last wicket.

The 23-year-old Gamage, batting at No 11, smashed eight fours in his 46-ball 40 while Buddhika hit an unbeaten 29 with three fours.

The pair fell just nine runs short of Sri Lanka's record last-wicket partnership of 73, between Hashan Tillakaratne and Sujeeva de Silva against Pakistan at Dhaka in 1998-99. Sri Lanka lost Sujeeva (five) in the day's third over after resuming at 301-8, but Gamage and Buddhika gave no respite to the tourists with hard and clean hitting during their rollicking stand. Bangladesh took the second new ball after 102 overs at 349 and broke the stand four overs later when fast bowler Talha Jubair had Gamage caught by Kapali at gully.

The tailenders then returned as seamers to haunt Bangladesh, who look doomed in their attempt to avoid their 12th defeat in 13 matches since gaining Test status in 2000.

Buddhika began the slide when he trapped Hannan Sarkar (five) leg-before in his third over.

Gamage claimed his maiden Test wicket with his first delivery after lunch as he bowled Mohammad Ashraful for 11 and then trapped newcomer Tushar Imran leg-before for eight.

Debutant Gamage makes merry

COLOMBO: Sri Lankan tailender Chamila Gamage flayed a Bangladeshi attack with an entertaining 40 on debut in the second and final Test here on Monday.

Gamage, batting at No 11, smashed eight fours in his 46-ball knock as Sri Lanka plundered 64 for the last wicket before being all out for 373 at the Sinhalese Sports Club ground.

Bangladesh faltered in reply as they lost openers Hannan Sarkar (five) and Al Sahariar (12) before reaching 28-2 at lunch on the second day.

Gamage, 23, received valuable support from Charitha Buddhika, who scored an unbeaten 29 with three fours.

Bangladesh took the second new ball after 102 overs at 349 and broke the stand four overs later when fast bowler Talha Jubair had Gamage caught by Alok Kapali at gully.

Buddhika then returned as a seamer to trouble Bangladesh, trapping Sarkar leg-before in his third over.

Left-arm spinner Sanath Jayasuriya had Sahariar caught by wicket-keeper Prasanna Jayawardene in the last over before lunch to put pressure on Bangladesh.

Rookie Vandort hits 61 for Sri Lanka

COLOMBO: A revamped Sri Lanka, with nine senior players sitting out, still got off to a strong start on the first day of the second Test against Bangladesh on Sunday.

Left-handed opener Michael Vandort struck 10 fours in his 61 to help Sri Lanka to 198 for four at tea. The 21-year-old Vandort, playing in only his second Test, was leg before to Alok Kopali just after lunch.

Vandort was followed quickly by Naveed Nawaz, who was caught by captain and wicketkeeper Khaled Mashud for 21 off Fahim Muntasir's bowling.

Veteran Hashan Tillekeratne contributed just 18 but despite the loss of three quick wickets, Sri Lanka regained composure as captain Sanath Jayasuriya and right-hander Thilan Samaraweera took the crease.

Both were still going strong at the break, as Jayasuriya scored four boundaries in his unbeaten 41 and Samaraweera remained unbeaten on 25.

Despite pleas by Jayasuriya and Sri Lankan Sports Minister Johnston Fernando that off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan should play in the Test, he was one of the old guard not selected.

The others included vice-captain Marvan Attapattu and veteran Aravinda de Silva, who scored 206 in the first Test as Sri Lanka won by an innings and 196 runs within three days.

Bangladesh have yet to win a Test since their debut two years ago with 11 defeats and one draw in 12 matches.
