Sri Lanka make 259 the target in final one-day

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka made 259 the target for Bangladesh on Wednesday in the third of three one-day internationals, giving the tourists little chance of pulling off a lone win in their final match of the series.

The hosts, playing without captain Sanath Jayasuriya or pace bowlers Chaminda Vaas and Dilhara Fernando, finished on 258 for six wickets after 50 overs in the first innings.

Bangladesh must beat the target on a pitch known to deteriorate during the course of a match, making it harder to time batting. Yet they bizarrely decided to field first after winning the toss.

The highest-ever total successfully chased on this pitch is 243. Sri Lanka started shakily, with acting captain Marvan Atapattu caught out by Khaled Mahmud off Tapash Baisya after making 20 runs.

War-horse Aravinda de Silva, opening the batting again after a spell at number six, twice escaped being run out thanks to poor Bangladeshi fielding when on eight runs and on 43.

De Silva was caught out by Alok Kopali off Khaled Mahmud after striking five boundaries in his 46. T.M.Dilshan, playing his first match of the series, hit five boundaries for his neat half-century before being caught off Mohammad Ashraful.

Left-hander Russel Arnold was the highest scorer, hitting four boundaries for his 62 before being caught by wicketkeeper and captain Khaled Mashud off medium bowler Khaled Mahmud.

Bangladesh did not make more than 184 in an innings against Sri Lanka during the two Test matches they played during the tour. They lost the first one-day international by five wickets, and the second by eight.

A Bangladesh defeat would be their 50th loss in a one-dayer, and would mean they return home without having won a match during their Sri Lanka tour.

Dilshan, Arnold bolster Sri Lanka

COLOMBO: Tillekaratne Dilshan and Russel Arnold slammed impressive half-centuries to help Sri Lanka post 258-6 in the third and final one-day international against Bangladesh here on Wednesday.

Sri Lanka were struggling at 115-4 against tight Bangladeshi bowling and fielding before Dilshan and Arnold propped up the innings with a 100-run stand for the fifth wicket.

Arnold struck four boundaries in his 64-ball 62 and Dilshan five in his 63-ball 50 as the hosts scored 101 in the last 15 overs after being put in to bat at the Premadasa Stadium.

Medium-pacer Khaled Mahmud was the most successful bowler as he finished with 3-51 off 10 overs, while left-arm spinner Mohammad Rafique conceded just 32 in his 10 economical overs.

Sri Lanka, who have already clinched the three-match series with wins in the first two games, rested skipper Sanath Jayasuriya along with pacemen Chaminda Vaas and Dilhara Fernando.

Bangladesh, shot out for their lowest total of 76 in the previous match on Monday, gave an improved performance as they made the top-order Sri Lankan batsmen struggle for runs.

Aravinda de Silva (46), Kumar Sangakkara (22) and stand-in captain Marvan Atapattu (20) all failed to capitalise on good starts before Arnold and Dilshan stepped up the run-rate.

Hasantha Fernando scored an unbeaten 23 off 21 deliveries with one six and one four in the closing overs.
