Hussain cracks 50 as England score 218-8

DUNEDIN, New Zealand: Skipper Nasser Hussain and young batsman Owais Shah both hit half-centuries as England scored 218 for eight in the fifth and final one-day international against New Zealand in Dunedin on Tuesday.

The England total was respectable if not huge and was helped along by a run-a-ball eighth wicket partnership of 31 between Craig White (17) and Ashley Giles (21 not out). Hussain and Shah shared a partnership of 71 just when England needed it.

The tourists slid to 62 for three after paceman Daryl Tuffey (3-42) had removed openers Marcus Trescothick and Nick Knight and Andre Adams (2-50) dismissed Graham Thorpe.

Shah's second one-day half-century was a good mixture of aggression, solid defence, sharp running and cheeky over-the-top shots. One of those shots offered a tough caught and bowled chance to Chris Harris, who managed to get a finger to the ball, when Shah was 46.

The Middlesex youngster was eventually trapped lbw by Chris Cairns, who again bowled with vigour to claim three for 32. Shah's innings of 57 took 81 balls and included six fours.

Hussain, who has yet to hit a one-day century for England and whose previous best score in the series was 35 in Christchurch, gave notice he was in form with some vicious strokes to the boundary.

He completed his 12th one-day half-century but was out for 50 when he skied a catch to Cairns on the mid-wicket boundary off the bowling of Tuffey.

Trescothick failed for the fourth time in the series when he picked out Harris at point off Tuffey and Knight went for 24 to a carbon copy dismissal involving the same bowler and fielder.

The normally reliable Thorpe played all round a delivery from Adams and was clean bowled for nine. Paul Collingwood briefly batted well with Shah before falling to a dazzling catch by Kiwi skipper Stephen Fleming.

Collingwood was looking for the ball to go flashing towards the point boundary, but Fleming jumped high to pluck it out of the sky. Andrew Flintoff was a disappointment. He completely misjudged a slower ball by Cairns and was bowled for one. The series is level at 2-2.

Hussain guides England to 104-3

DUNEDIN, New Zealand: Captain Nasser Hussain was unbeaten on 40 as England reached 104 for three after 25 overs in the fifth and final one-day international against New Zealand in Dunedin on Tuesday.

At the halfway mark of the innings, much rested on Hussain and Owais Shah, who was on 22. With the series tied at 2-2, England had won the toss and opted to bat first. It was Hussain's fourth correct call in the series but he watched Marcus Trescothick fall for five in the third over when the left-handed opener drove Daryl Tuffey straight to Chris Harris at point.

Hussain and Nick Knight, though, played some belligerent strokes and took the score quickly to 43 when Knight, on 24, got a thick edge to a delivery from Tuffey and the ball flew low to Harris just backward of point.
Tuffey, whose opening spell yielded figures of two for 24 in six overs, bowled well in tandem with Andre Adams (one for 39 off eight).

Adams was the more expensive of the two and had just been slashed backward of point for four when he clean bowled Graham Thorpe for nine.

England win toss and bat

DUNEDIN, New Zealand: England captain Nasser Hussain won the toss and decided to bat first in the decisive fifth and final one-day international against New Zealand in Dunedin on Tuesday.

England recalled young Middlesex batsman Owais Shah in place of the injured Michael Vaughan. Vaughan dislocated his shoulder attempting to catch Craig McMillan in the fourth game of the series in Auckland on Saturday.

It is hoped the Yorkshireman will be fit for the first Test in Christchurch beginning on March 13. New Zealand went into the Dunedin match fielding the same team that lost by 34 runs in Auckland.
The series is level at 2-2.

Teams:
New Zealand - Stephen Fleming (captain), Nathan Astle, Chris Nevin, Lou Vincent, Brendon McCullum, Craig McMillan, Chris Cairns, Chris Harris, Andre Adams, Daniel Vettori, Daryl Tuffey.
England - Nasser Hussain (captain), Nick Knight, Marcus Trescothick, Graham Thorpe, Owais Shah, Paul Collingwood, Andy Flintoff, Craig White, Ashley Giles, Darren Gough, Matthew Hoggard.
