Flintoff shines as England defeat Sri Lanka

NOTTINGHAM, England: All-rounder Andrew Flintoff smashed a quickfire 50 and grabbed three wickets as England beat Sri Lanka by 44 runs in the first match of the triangular one-day series on Thursday.

England set a daunting target of 294 to win off 50 overs with Alec Stewart hitting a superb 83. Stewart shared partnerships of 95 with Ronnie Irani (39) and 84 with Flintoff, who finished on 50 not out.

Romesh Kaluwitharana (52) and Marvan Atapattu (47) put Sri Lanka in with a chance of victory but their run chase evenually petered out and the tourists finished on 249-9 off 50 overs.

Flintoff took 3-49 while James Kirtley and Paul Collingwood grabbed two wickets apiece. England face India in the second match of the series at Lord's on Saturday.

England 168-4 despite Fernando double strike

NOTTINGHAM, England: Sri Lankan paceman Dilhara Fernando struck twice in the same over as England were reduced to 129 for four off 25 overs in the first match of the triangular one-day series on Thursday.

But ex-skipper Alec Stewart and Ronnie Irani hit back and after 33 overs the home side had moved on to 168 without further loss.

Fernando claimed the wickets of captain Nasser Hussain (32) and Graham Thorpe (18) and brought to an end a promising partnership.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, England openers Marcus Trescothick and Nick Knight scored just seven runs off their first three overs. But the left-handed pair upped the tempo in the fourth over, each batsmen clipping a four off their legs as Nuwan Zoysa went for 14 runs. They continued to score freely and took nine runs off each of the next two overs before Zoysa trapped Knight lbw for 20 in the sixth.

Trescothick (26) was the next to go, Kumar Sangakkara taking a brilliant catch off the bowling of Zoysa as England were reduced to 47 for two in the ninth over.

After a nervous start, Hussain soon found his rhythm and together with Thorpe put on 64 in the next 10 overs as England reached their 100 off 109 balls. But just as the experienced pair looked to be getting on top, Fernando clipped the England captain's off stump, before forcing left-hander Thorpe to drag on to his own wicket just three balls later.

Irani (not out 24) and Stewart (not out 37) then set about rebuilding the England innings. India are the other side in the triangular tournament.
