Gibbs, Kallis share century stand

COLOMBO: Opener Herschelle Gibbs hit an unbeaten 74 to put South Africa in a strong position chasing 262 for victory against India in the first Champions Trophy semi-final on Wednesday.

The 1998 champions reached 128 for one in 25 overs, losing Graeme Smith early on for four runs. India made 261 for nine after electing to bat in the day-night game. Gibbs shared an unbroken second wicket stand of 114 runs with Jacques Kallis, who was 43 not out.

Kallis was reprieved on 31 when Vangipurappu Laxman dropped a chance at slip as he edged a cut against leg-spinner Anil Kumble before raising the 100-run stand in 121 balls.

The 28-year-old Gibbs was productive early on against erratic left-arm paceman Ashish Nehra before he and Kallis picked up easy runs against Kumble and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, who both struggled for rhythm on a slow pitch.

Gibbs, who hit 116 in the previous game against Kenya, reached his half-century from 59 balls before bringing up South Africa's 100 in the 22nd over.

Smith fell to a brilliant one-handed catch by Yuvraj Singh at backward point trying to cut Zaheer Khan.

Khan bowled sharply but Nehra was too erratic at the other end. Earlier, Yuvraj Singh top-scored with 62 after opener Virender Sehwag had hit 59 to shore up the Indian innings which lost its way in the middle overs.

Key batsman Sachin Tendulkar was outsmarted by South Africa's best fielder Jonty Rhodes to be run out for 16 to leave India struggling at 135-4 in the 26th over. Shaun Pollock, who bore the brunt of Sehwag's early assault, came back strongly to capture three wickets in the penultimate over.

Pollock finished with 3-43 from nine overs while veteran Allan Donald returned 2-41 from eight overs of sharp pace.

The winners will meet either world champions Australia or hosts Sri Lanka, who play the second semi-final on Friday.
