Tendulkar ton fires Indian run feast

BRISTOL, England: Sachin Tendulkar struck a masterful 113 as India piled up a total of 304 in the final triangular series group match against Sri Lanka on Thursday.

Tendulkar hit a six and 12 fours in his 33rd one-day international century as India, already through to the tournament final against England on Saturday, plundered the Sri Lankan attack after winning the toss.

Two needless run-outs had threatened to undermine India's early progress in the day/night game.

Captain Sourav Ganguly was the first man to fall for nine as he attempted a second run and Virender Sehwag was left stranded after making a quickfire 39.

Sehwag had shared a fluent second-wicket partnership of 41 with Dinesh Mongia when he set off for an impossible quick single and was run out trying to recover his ground by a direct hit from bowler Dilhara Fernando.

But Tendulkar and Mongia shared a third-wicket stand of 99 to put their side on course for an imposing total. Mongia was bowled by Thilan Samaraweera for 48 and although Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh fell cheaply, Tendulkar and Mohammad Kaif added 74 at quicker than a run-a-ball.

Tendulkar reached his second hundred of the tournament and seventh in one-dayers against Sri Lanka, and he has now scored 14 more one-day international centuries than any other player in history. He was finally out caught at third man by Upul Chandana after skying a catch off Chaminda Vaas, but Kaif's knock of 41 put India within sight of 300 before he was well caught by Chamara Silva at deep square leg.

Fernando bowled Ashish Nehra with the last ball of the innings. England top the group standings with 15 points from six group games, with India on 14 and Sri Lanka, seeking only their second win of the tournament, on four.

Needless run-outs fail to halt Indian run spree

BRISTOL, England: Two needless run-outs failed to halt India's serene progress as they reached 155 for two in the final triangular series group match against Sri Lanka on Thursday.

After 25 overs, Sachin Tendulkar was unbeaten on 48 with Dinesh Mongia on 43 as India, already through to the tournament final against England, plundered the Sri Lanka attack after winning the toss.

India captain Saurav Ganguly was the first man to fall, run out for nine attempting a needless second and Virender Sehwag was left stranded after making a quickfire 39.

Sehwag had shared a fluent second-wicket partnership of 41 with Mongia when he set off for an impossible quick single and was run out trying to recover his ground by a direct hit from bowler Dilhara Fernando.

But Tendulkar and Mongia shared an unbeaten third-wicket partnership of 82 to put their side on course for an imposing total.

India, who play England in the final at Lord's on Saturday, recalled wicketkeeper/batsman Rahul Dravid and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh.

Sri Lanka, playing the last game of their disappointing tour of England, recalled Fernando for Pramodya Wickramasinghe as they sought only their second win of the tournament.

England top the standings with 15 points from six group games, with India on 14 and Sri Lanka on four.
