Gibbs century helps South Africa amass 316-5
COLOMBO: Opener Herschelle Gibbs smashed his eighth one-day century as South Africa took command against Kenya in their deciding Champions Trophy pool 3 clash on Friday.
South Africa, needing victory to make sure of their semi-final place, piled up 316 for five wickets in 50 overs after their skipper Shaun Pollock chose to bat in the day-night clash at the Premadasa Stadium. The 28-year-old Gibbs made 116 from 125 balls, 70 of them in boundaries, to lead his side's crushing domination of the Kenyan bowling, which faded after a lively start.
Gibbs shared a 159-run opening stand with 21-year-old Graeme Smith, the powerful left-hander hitting a 77-ball 69 after being dropped on 31 and 66.
All-rounder Jacques Kallis then showed a return to form by making a 53-ball 60 to enable South Africa go past 300 for the 13th time.
Gibbs was contained early on by tight Kenyan bowling and fielding which conceded only 38 runs come from the first 10 overs.
But he then tore into the attack, pulling and driving new ball bowlers Martin Suji and Thomas Odoyo for a flurry of fours to step up the scoring momentum with the 21-year-old Smith.
Gibbs dominated the slow bowlers, hoisting leg-spinner Collins Obuya over mid-wicket and out of the stadium for his first six before reaching his century with his 12th four.
Gibbs looked set to surpass his one-day best score of 125 as he hit off-spinner Jimmy Kamande for six, four and six off successive balls but was caught behind off the next delivery in the 37th over.
The talented Smith hit some firm back-foot shots on a slow pitch and had made 29 to Gibbs's six before his senior partner took over.
Smith completed his third one-day fifty before being stumped by wicketkeeper David Obuya, who finished with four victims, trying to sweep off-spinner Maurice Odumbe.
Smith hit six fours in his 77-ball effort which was dominated by well-timed drives through the covers and mid-wicket.
The Kenyan fielders, who dropped four catches during their 29-run defeat by West Indies on Tuesday -- three off centurion Brian Lara -- once again put down chances.
Ravindu Shah dropped Smith at short mid-wicket and Brijal Patel could not hold on after diving forward at midwicket. Kallis dominated the final overs to reach his 38th one-day fifty before being stumped, the ball deflecting on to the stumps off the keeper's pads.
He hit five fours and a six. South Africa will meet the winners of Sunday's deciding pool 2 game between England and India in the last four if they beat Kenya.
