South Africa earn crucial victory

ADELAIDE: South Africa recorded an emphatic 93-run win over New Zealand in one of their (South Africa) crucial VB Series day-night match at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.

Hosts Australia take on Black Caps in a day-night encounter in Melbourne on Tuesday (January 29).

Scores: 
South Africa 253-5 in 50 overs (H H Gibbs 89, J N Rhodes 55, M V Boucher 57; C L Cairns 2-69)
New Zealand 160 all out in 45.2 overs (S P Fleming 43; N Boje 4-31).

ADELAIDE: Herschelle Gibbs smashed a polished knock of 89 as South Africa reached 253-5 in their 188-minute batting in the 9th one-day international of VB Triangular series against New Zealand at Adelaide Oval on Sunday. 

Gibbs's well-paced innings and his 65-run stand for the second wicket with Jacques Kallis (30) helped the tourists recover from 9-1 after electing to bat. 

Gibbs struck seven fours in his 132-ball knock. 

Jonty Rhodes was the other notable scorer from the tourists' side with a super innings of 55. He hit three fours and a six off 54 balls before being caught by New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming off Franklin. During the course of his innings he also reached the milestone of scoring more than 5000 runs (5024) in One-day Internationals. 

He was also involved in an invaluable 86-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Mark Boucher who scored scored an unbeaten 57 punctuated with three fours and two sixes. 

Chris Cairns chipped in with two wickets conceding 69 runs. Daniel Vettori, Franklin and last night's man of the match winner Shane Bond grabbed one wicket each by giving away 34, 39 and 47 runs respectively in the tourists' 50-over innings.
