Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 41 runs

SHARJAH: Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan by 41 runs in the inaugural match of the Sharjah Cup here late Monday night. Chasing a victory target of 243, Pakistanis could score only 201 runs off to give a comfortable victory to Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka falter despite Jayasuriya's blitz

SHARJAH: Pakistan overcame a blistering knock from Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya to keep their rivals down to 242-9 from 50 overs in the Sharjah Cup opener here on Monday.

Jayasuriya, who won the toss and elected to bat, hammered 87 off 78 balls before Pakistan fought back with quick wickets in the middle overs and towards the end. Sri Lanka were tottering at 128-4 in the 25th over, but Russel Arnold hit a valuable 57 to boost the total in the day-night international.

Arnold put on 43 for the fifth wicket with Romesh Kaluwitharana and 52 off 42 balls for the sixth with Upul Chandana (30). Fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar was the pick of Pakistan's bowlers, taking three for 30 in his 10 overs. 

Left-handed Jayasuriya, who smashed 10 boundaries and three sixes in his whirlwind innings, hit 22 runs in one over from Abdul Razzaq.He gave a chance at 72 when he pulled Razzaq to deep square-leg where Yousuf Youhana spilled an easy catch. Jayasuriya scored at a brisk pace even as his partners fell cheaply at the other end. Kumar Sangakkara managed just 10 in a nine-over opening stand of 50 with Jayasuriya, who dominated the strike to score 36.

Marvan Atapattu (six) was caught behind trying to hook Akhtar, while Mahela Jayawardena (eight) fell to an uppish on-drive off Razzaq which was taken at mid-wicket. Jayasuriya missed his 12th one-day century by 13 runs when he was finally dismissed in the 25th over, edging an away swinger from Razzaq to wicket-keeper Rashid Latif.

Sri Lanka lost their last four wickets for 16 runs as Pakistan set themselves a target of 4.9 runs an over. New Zealand is the third team in the 250,000-dollar tournament.

Jayasuriya fires Sri Lanka in Sharjah opener

SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates: Sanath Jayasuriya smashed 87 to hold the Sri Lanka innings together in their opening match against Pakistan in the Sharjah Cup triangular event on Monday.

Half-way through their innings Sri Lanka, who won the toss, were 128 for four, with Russel Arnold and Romesh Kaluwitharana fresh to the crease. 

Jayasuriya went on the offensive from the start, exploiting the fielding restrictions in the first 15 overs.He hit 22 runs off Abdur Razzaq's second over, moving from 49 to 71 in just six balls in a scoring sequence of 4, 4, 0, 6, 4, 4. Jayasuriya put on 50 for the opening wicket with a subdued Kumar Sangakkarain nine overs before the latter was yorked by Wasim Akram for 10.

Marvan Atapattu went cheaply, swinging wildly at a delivery from pace bowler Shoaib Akhtar and edging to wicketkeeper Rashid Latif while Mahela Jayawardene also failed, falling to Razzaq.

Medium pacer Razzaq almost dismissed Jayasuriya in his next over but Yousuf Youhana failed to hold a skier at deep square leg. Jayasuriya went on to make his runs off 79 balls, with 10 fours and three sixes, before falling caught behind in the 25th over. New Zealand are the third team in the event.

Sri Lanka elect to bat against Pakistan

SHARJAH: Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya won the toss and elected to bat against Pakistan in the opening match of the three-nation Sharjah Cup here on Monday.

New Zealand is the other team in the 250,000-dollar limited-overs tournament.
