Gibbs century inspires South Africa

TANGIERS: A century from opener Herschelle Gibbs inspired South Africa to an impressive 283 for nine in the opening match of the Morocco Cup triangular tournament on Monday.

Gibbs played conservatively for the first half of his innings, requiring 80 balls to reach his half century, but as batting conditions improved he unleashed an array of attacking shots which brought up his second 50 from just 43 deliveries.

He struck eight fours and three sixes in all and by the time he was caught at deep square-leg in the 44th over his innings of 114 had spanned just 130 deliveries.

The innings began inauspiciously when senior opener Gary Kirsten (2) top edged a pull against Waqar Younis into the gloves of wicketkeeper Rashid Latif.

Jacques Kallis (22) steadied the innings before edging the same bowler to Latif with the total on 51. South Africa remained positive, however, by promoting Nicky Boje to number four and the left hander responded with a blazing innings of 52 from just 45 balls with five boundaries and two sixes.

He dominated a third-wicket stand of 85 with Gibbs who was clearly happy to play the junior role as Boje smashed the 15th over of the innings, bowled by Abdur Razzaq, for 15 runs to inject some urgency into the innings.

Boje sliced a drive against spinner Shahid Afridi to backward point after belting five fours and two sixes but the pace of scoring was maintained in the normally quiet middle overs by Jonty Rhodes who ran as hard as ever and played a variety of unconventional shots in scoring an unbeaten 46 from just 49 balls. The innings ended in something of a whimper as Pakistan captain Waqar Younis maintained his discipline in the closing overs to collect three tailend wickets and finish with the highly creditable figures of five for 38 from 10 overs.
