Disciplined South Africans contain West Indies

COLOMBO: The West Indies failed to make the most of a Chris Gayle cameo as they were restricted to 238-8 by South Africa in the Champions Trophy one-day cricket tournament here on Friday.

The left-hander contributed a quickfire 49 in a 63-run stand for the opening wicket with Shivnarine Chanderpaul, but the West Indies lost their way after his dismissal as the disciplined South Africans struck back.

Ramnaresh Sarwan made a run-a-ball 36 late in the innings to help the West Indies cross the 225-mark, but his team still failed to post a challenging total despite scoring 70 in the last 10 overs.

Veteran paceman Allan Donald and seamer Jacques Kallis played a crucial role in containing the West Indies, sharing four wickets.

Gayle went for his shots early in the innings after his team had been put in to bat on a slow pitch, flicking paceman Shaun Pollock for a four and then punishing both Alan Dawson and Donald.

He hoisted Dawson straight for the first six of the match and then cut the next delivery for a boundary.

He did not spare Donald either, straight-driving the paceman's first delivery for a four and following it up with two more in the same over.

Donald, who conceded 14 in his opening over, had the last laugh as he induced an error in driving to have Gayle caught behind.

The West Indian struck one six and eight fours in his 55-ball knock.

But the fireworks did not come from the other end as Chanderpaul kept batting slowly, hitting his first boundary after 40 balls.

Brian Lara tried to force the pace and executed some handsome shots during his 33-ball 21 before falling to an ambitious shot. He stepped out to loft left-arm spinner Nicky Boje over long-off, only to be caught by Donald.

Chanderpaul fell at 153, uppishly driving Dawson straight to Boeta Dippenaar at mid-off after scoring 45 off 98 balls.

Skipper Carl Hooper (27) was also dismissed at the same total after playing an attractive, but brief, knock which was not enough to put his team in a strong position.

He hit Boje over long-on for a six and then struck three fours before being adjudged leg-before off Pollock.

Gayle ensures an encouraging start for West Indies

COLOMBO: Some quick scoring from opener Chris Gayle helped West Indies to an encouraging 103 for one after 25 overs of their Champions Trophy pool 3 clash with South Africa on Friday.

South Africa put the West Indies into bat and Gayle made 49 from only 55 balls to give the innings some momentum after a slow start on a hot and sunny day at the Sinhalese Sports Club.

Gayle and his fellow left-handed opener Shivnarine Chanderpaul initially struggled to make any headway against tight bowling from South African captain Shaun Pollock and Alan Dawson with only three runs coming from the first four overs.

But Gayle eventually found his timing with impressive results. He began his assault with two fours from Pollock's third over, then clubbed Dawson down the ground for a straight six followed by a edged forcing shot over backward point for four more runs.

A pick-up off his toes in Dawson's next over maintained the momentum, before he took 14 runs off Allan Donald's first over, including three fours, to bring up the West Indies 50 the 13th over.

Donald gained his revenge in his next over when Gayle, on the brink of his 13th one-day international fifty, inside edged another attempted drive and Mark Boucher took a straightforward catch behind the stumps. Gayle's fall left the West Indies at 63 for one but Chanderpaul, who had made just eight in the opening stand, soon caught the mood with successive driven boundaries off Jacques Kallis.

New batsman Brian Lara clipped Lance Klusener for four to bring up the 100 at the end of the 24th over and the West Indies looked well placed for a competitive total at the halfway stage.

Chanderpaul was on 25 and Lara had scored 20. With both sides expected to beat Kenya, the third team in pool 3, the loser of this match is likely to face an early exit from the tournament.
