Collymore guides WI to surprise win over SL
COLOMBO: Fast bowler Corey Collymore guided West Indies to a 49-run surprise victory over Sri Lanka in the third match of the triangular series match here at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
The hosts failed to capitalise on the explosive start provided by openers Avishka Gunawardene and Sanath Jayasuriya and were bowled out for 201 in 43.2 overs. Only wicket-keeper Kumar Sangakkara, batting at number six, managed to cross 25 after the openers who scored 38 and 83 runs respectively.
The hosts, who bowled out Zimbabwe for one-day low 38 in their last match of the series, looked troubled against the West Indians who bowled tidily and gave away just 8 extras. Collymore took five wickets in the space of 27 balls and put in the shade a superb all-round performance by Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya.
Jayasuriya had earlier in the day taken three wickets and accounted for a run out. Electing to bat, the West Indies were 150-2 in 27 overs, when Jayasuriya removed Brian Lara (60), Ramnaresh Sarwan (38) and Marlon Samuels (2) with his left-arm spin bowling.
Lara was the top-scorer, his 53-ball knock containing six fours and two sixes. He was trapped leg-before wicket by Jayasuriya.
Ganga, who had put on 50 runs with opening partner Chris Gayle, scored exactly 50. He hit five fours and one six off 68 balls.
Off-spinner Kumar Dharmasena bowled well for Sri Lanka in the end overs, claiming three scalps.
Chasing 251 runs to win, the hosts fared badly with the bat. Jayasuriya's 83 off 86 balls and his 92-run opening stand with Avishka Gunawardene had put Sri Lanka in a position of strength and they were cruising along at 119-1 in the 23rd over, when some bad shots and then the superb spell by Collymore sparked their collapse.
Corey Collymore bowled well and was declared Man of the Match for his heroics with the ball. The 24-year-old seamer finished with 5-51, even as Ridley Jacobs equalled the world record of most dismissals by a wicketkeeper in a one-day match.
The combination of Collymore and Jacobs proved lethal. As many as four batsmen were caught by Jacobs off Collymore, who got the ball to move away off the seam.
Ridley Jacobs equalled the world record of most dismissals in an innings in One-day Internationals and joins the elite list of Adam Gilchrist and Alec Stewart as the only keeper to have taken six victims behind the stump in an innings.
All three teams in the tournament now have one win each from two matches.

Lara shows WI the way again
COLOMBO: Brian Lara showed West Indies the way again as he helped them to 250 for eight in their triangular One-day International on Tuesday.
The groundwork was laid by openers Chris Gayle and Daren Ganga, who put on 50 from the first 10 overs on a good batting track after Carl Hooper had won the toss.
The in-form Lara, however, in such good form in the recently concluded Test series against Sri Lanka, added even further impetus. The left-hander scored at faster than a run-a-ball on the way to a top score of 60, which included six fours and two successive sixes off spinner Kumar Dharmasena.
Ganga made 50 off 68 balls with five fours and a six, putting on 74 off 72 deliveries with number three Lara.
The West Indies, who lost their opening game of the tournament by four wickets to Zimbabwe on Sunday, scored at more than
five-and-a-half an over before Lara's dismissal.
Sri Lanka then clawed their way back into the game, with Dharmasena bowling Ridley Jacobs (25) and Pedro Collins (0) off successive deliveries in his final over.
Dharmasena and skipper Sanath Jayasuriya were the pick of the bowlers, each claiming three for 50. Off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan was the most economical, conceding 35 off 10 overs for the wicket of Hooper.
