Jayawardene,
Gunawardene head run spree against Zimbabwe
COLOMBO: Avishka Gunawardene and Mahela
Jayawardene shared a third-wicket partnership of
166 and took full advantage of Zimbabwe blunders
as Sri Lanka scored 272 for eight in their
triangular One-day International on Wednesday.
Both missed out on hundreds, though. Gunawardene
scored 90, hitting eight fours in a 131-ball
innings before pulling a delivery from pace bowler
Heath Streak to Stuart Carlisle at wide mid-on.
Jayawardene, meanwhile, fell lbw to paceman Henry
Olonga on 96. He faced 108 balls and hit ten
fours.
Zimbabwe paid dearly for letting off both batsmen
early in their innings in the day-night match.
Gunawardene was dropped by Craig Wishart at first
slip off Travis Friend on nine and Jayawardene had
two reprieves, the first on 22 when wicket-keeper
Andy Flower failed to hold on to a snick off
spinner Douglas Marillier. He was also dropped off
a sitter by Dion Ebrahim at backward point off
Olonga on 92.
The pair came together after Sri Lankan captain
Sanath Jayasuriya won the toss and elected to bat
on what appeared to be a perfect batting wicket.
Jayasuriya, who had scored 83 against the West
Indies Tuesday, was out in the second ball of the
innings.
Heath Streak took the crucial wicket when the
left-hander swished loosely at a wide delivery and
was caught behind by Andy Flower. He was followed
five overs later by Marvan Atapattu, who cut a
short ball from Friend to Olonga who dived forward
to take the catch and leave Sri Lanka on 25 for
two.
A final flourish was provided by Russel Arnold,
who scored a quickfire 34 off 27 balls. Streak was
the pick of the Zimbabwe bowlers, with three for
51.
Sri Lankan made one change to the side that lost
to West Indies by 49 runs Wednesday, recalling
leg-spinning all-rounder Upul Chandana in place of
fast bowling all-rounder Suresh Perera, who bowled
just one costly over and was caught behind for
four.
Zimbabwe named an unchanged side to the team that
defeated West Indies on Sunday. West Indies are
the other team in the tournament. Each side has
won one of their two matches.December 12, 2001 - 0900 GMT
