Vaughan hits century in drawn tour match

BRISBANE: Michael Vaughan hit an impressive century three days before the first Ashes Test as England drew their three-day tour match against Queensland on Monday. Resuming at 106 for one in reply to Queensland's massive first innings total of 582, England reached 322 for seven before bad light stopped play an hour early during the final session.

Vaughan, playing his first match on the tour following a knee injury, made 127 including 23 boundaries and a six.

The right-hander, who was on 49 overnight, put on an even 100 for the first wicket with Marcus Trescothick (46) on Sunday and 92 for the third wicket with Mark Butcher, who was out shortly after lunch on Monday for 45. England captain Nasser Hussain, who made 117 in the tour match against Western Australia last week, smashed five boundaries in his 28 from 60 balls, sharing a 60-run partnership with Vaughan for the fourth wicket.

Vaughan was out six runs later at 275 and Crawley soon followed as the tourists lost five wickets in the middle session for 93 runs to be 292 for six at tea.

Martin Love made 250 for Queensland after being dropped four times as the Australian interstate champions spurned the chance to make an early declaration on Sunday, forcing the tourists to stay in the field as long as possible before the first Test starting on Thursday in Brisbane.

Young off-spinner Nathan Hauritz, 21, took three for 48 for Queensland on Monday, trapping Vaughan lbw and also dismissing Hussain and Crawley.
