Hasib Ahsan calls for democracy at all levels in cricket

KARACH: Former Pakistan Test cricketer Hasib Ahsan on Wednesday called for introducing democracy in cricket at all levels for positive results. "Conducting elections for the post of chairman or a couple of other posts will not be a true domocracy," he told APP in an interview here.

He supported Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for introducing domocarcy in cricket. However Ex-chief selectors Hasib said the democracy should be like the one launched at district and national level by President General Pervez Musharraf in the country.

He said he also supported certain conditions of education for the elected office- bearers at all levels. He said there should be a full scale domocratic set-up in PCB and merely the election of PCB chairman will not achieve the goal.

He said from chairman, chief executive, treasurer to member of the council in PCB should be elected and voters voting in election should be representatives of various cities across the country.

He said selection committee should be an independent body appointed by the PCB Council and answerable to them only. He also favoured inclusion of technocrats in PCB.

However, he emphasised that these technocrats should be ex-Test, one-day cricketers or with good first class cricket of at least ten years. Hasib said none of the vested interests should be allowed to come into cricket set-up which has harmed the sport in the past.
