Australia bowls Pakistan for lowest score

SHARJAH: Australia bowled Pakistan out for its lowest test total of 59 on Friday before racing to 191 for 4 on the first day of the second test at the Sharjah Stadium.

Ace leg spinner Shane Warne collected four for 11 from 11 overs to send Pakistan tumbling to a new low after the three-pronged pace attack of Glenn McGrath, Brett Lee and Adam Bichel had done the early damage.

Pakistan, losing the first wicket for no score, fell three short of the previous lowest of 62 against the Australians at Perth in the 1981/82 series.

SHARJAH: Australian captain Steve Waugh (C), playing in his 150th Test, walks off after being dismissed for a duck on the opening day of the second Test on Friday, October 11, 2002

Matthew Hayden then anchored the Australian reply, stroking 74 not out from 136 deliveries, having put on a brisk 55 for the first wicket with fellow left hander Justin Langer.

But Australia, which has a lead of 132 with six wickets in hand, was rocked in the last session of play by Pakistani spinners Saqlain Mushtaq and Danish Kaneria, who took three wickets in eight balls. Off spinner Mushtaq dismissed the out of form Mark Waugh for two and skipper Steve Waugh without scoring with his third and fourth deliveries of his 12th over. New batsman Damien Martyn, who is unbeaten on 19, barely survived the hat-trick delivery.

Mark Waugh had made two when he was fooled by Mushtaq's delivery while twin brother Steve popped a catch to close in substitute fielder Imran Farhat off the first ball he faced in his 150th Test.

Mushtaq finished with 2 for 47 off 18 overs.

Australia, 145 for one at one stage, slipped to 148 for four after Ricky Ponting was trapped leg before wicket by leg spinner Kaneria for 44 in the previous over.

Opener Langer smacked Kaneria for a big six and four at long on in one over in his knock of 37 from 45 deliveries. He was run out in bizarre fashion at the bowler's end.

Kaneria failed to hold a return catch from Hayden, but deflected the ball onto the stumps with Langer stranded out of his crease. Hayden, also dropped by first slip Younis Khan off Mushtaq on 50, struck powerful leg side blows off Shoaib Akhtar and Kaneria.

The strapping left hander reached his half century off 78 balls and 127 minutes. In all, he hit six boundaries in his watchful 223 minute stay.

Hayden posted 90 for the second wicket with Ponting, smashing four boundaries and a six before being judged lbw when padding a ball from Kaneria.

Pakistan's inexperienced batting line-up was shown up horribly by the pace and spin attack in the morning.

Warne, man of the match with a haul of 11 wickets in the first test win in Colombo earlier this week, proved unplayable again despite describing conditions as the hottest he had faced.

"It was intolerably hot and this is as hot as it gets,'' Warne later told reporters. "Everyone bowled extremely well today and I am very happy from a personal point of view at my form,'' said the spinner. Warne, who spent five minutes in an ice bath after his effort, said that he was able to cope and recover faster after shedding about 12 kilos (26 1/2 pounds) over the past six months.

McGrath, Lee and Bichel picked up two wickets each in aggressive display of fast bowling, helped by a close in field and quick bowling changes by skipper Steve Waugh.

Pakistan's batsmen added to the chaos with a poor selection of strokes against the quickies, after McGrath had Imran Nazir caught for no score in the slips by Warne in the first over.

Lee bowled opener Taufeeq Umar, also for a duck, in the next over leaving Pakistan one for two before McGrath, bowling to six slips, sent back Younis Khan for five, making it eight for three.

Bichel, replacing the injured Jason Gillepsie in this test, accounted for rookie Mishabul Haq for two before Abdul Razzak (21) and Faisal Iqbal (5) took the score to 41 for four.

Warne ended the partnership snaring Iqbal, the nephew of former Pakistani great Javed Miandad, before snapping up two wickets in three balls, including Razzak and fellow spinner Saqlain Mushtaq.

Razzak was caught by Damien Martyn trying to drive while Mushtaq failed to read the flight and spin and was adjudged leg before wicket for a duck. Pakistan went into lunch at 50 for nine in 28.4 overs.

Lee finished off the innings, 19 balls after the lunch break by bowling Kaneria for eight, completing a lethal bowling performance under hot and humid conditions.
