Queensland take innings points against NSW

BRISBANE: Rookie fast bowler Damien MacKenzie became an unlikely hero as Queensland claimed first-innings points over New South Wales in a tense Sheffield Shield cricket match at the Gabba here on Saturday.

MacKenzie broke the NSW resistance with three quick wickets as they were rolled for 443 in reply to Queensland's declaration of 507 for five.

Queensland then made the most of batting practice in sapping heat to reach 216 for one in their second innings when the captains agreed to an early finish, with Brendan Nash following his 176 with an unbeaten 81.

Jimmy Maher (60) and Martin Love (56 not out) joined in the runs.

The day started out promising more for NSW and they looked likely to take the points when they crept to 405 for five.

But MacKenzie (3-98) claimed the wickets of Brad Haddin (23), captain Simon Katich (43) and Stuart MacGill (0) in 19 balls to wreck NSW's hopes.
