SA selectors spot Hayward's 'shortcomings'

EAST LONDON, South Africa: South Africa scored a predictably emphatic innings and 107 runs win over hapless Bangladesh in the first Test on Monday, but selection convenor Omar Henry found fault with paceman Mornantau Hayward.

Colleagues Makhaya Ntini and David Terbrugge both grabbed five-wicket hauls in the match, but Hayward's figures were 2 for 50 off 15 overs and 2 for 65 off 16 overs. Lack of accuracy and a failure to make the batsmen play at enough deliveries were clear to see.

"Makhaya was fantastic," Henry said. "We've identified Mornantau's shortcomings and there is room for improvement. Terbrugge has come back nicely, and he's the replacement for (injured captain Shaun) Pollock."

Hayward did not take the field on Monday because of 'flu, but Henry said he would be fit in time for the second Test.
