Ngam back in SA team for Bangladesh one-dayers

JOHANNESBURG: Fast bowler Mfuneko Ngam was Thursday recalled to the South African squad for the first two of three one-day internationals against Bangladesh.

Ngam, 23, burst onto the international scene when he played in one Test against New Zealand and two against Sri Lanka two seasons ago. But a stress fracture in his right leg, followed by an operation on his right shoulder, caused him to miss virtually the whole of last season.

Ngam has been slowly building up to full fitness in early matches this season and played in two of six matches that South Africa A played against Australia A recently.

His selection for the first one-day international in Potchefstroom next Thursday and the second match in Benoni on October 6 is subject to his fitness in a four-day match for Eastern Province against Northerns this weekend.

The South African team includes uncapped batsman Martin van Jaarsveld, 28, who was the leading run-scorer in South African first-class cricket last season and the top scorer for South Africa in the A series against the Australians. He replaces veteran Jonty Rhondes, who is being rested after suffering a hand injury during the ICC champions trophy tournament in Sri Lanka.

The 14-man squad also includes wicketkeeper Errol Stewart, 33, who played in five One-day Internationals during the 1992-93 and 1993-94 seasons.

Ngam and Stewart replace the injured Alan Dawson and Nicky Boje from the South African squad that reached the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy before being beaten by India Wednesday.

Robin Peterson, who made his international debut against India after being flown to Sri Lanka as a replacement for Boje, was not picked. Peterson will play for South Africa A against the Bangladeshis in Soweto Tuesday. Van Jaarsveld will also play for the A side before joining the full national squad.

Squads:
South Africa: Shaun Pollock (captain), Mark Boucher (vice captain), Dale Benkenstein, Boeta Dippenaar, Allan Donald, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, Lance Klusener, Mfuneko Ngam, Makhaya Ntini, Justin Ontong, Graeme Smith, Errol Stewart, Martin van Jaarsveld. South Africa A: Neil McKenzie (captain), Andrew Hall, Loots Bosman, Jacques Rudolph, Ashwell Prince, Martin van Jaarsveld, Robin Peterson, Thami Tsolekile, David Terbrugge, Andre Nel, Monde Zondeki, Enoch Nkwe (12th man).
