Ex-NZ cricketer appointed Falklands coach

AUCKLAND: Former Auckland and New Zealand cricketer Warren Stott has been appointed fulltime cricket coach for the Falkland islands, a statement said on Thursday.

Stott's appointment will be funded by the Falklands Islands Shackleton Fund established to promote sport and leisure on the South Atlantic islands, the New Zealand Vintage Sports Trust statement said.

Stott said many residents of the Falklands, with a population of around 3,000, play cricket. "I am not sure what to expect in the Falklands ... but am very excited to be visiting the cricket outback," said Stott. "Currently they play little overseas cricket, but they are members of the Pan-American cricket group and are hoping to develop a representative team in the future.

"It could be the start of something good in the cricket world."
