West Indians score exact 300 against Pakistanis

KARACHI: Playing a three-day practice match against the Pakistanis, at the Police Park in Colombo, the West Indians were all out for exactly 300 on the opening day on Friday, replying to which the Pakistanis had scored two runs off four balls before play was called off due to failing light.

The Pakistan team is in Sri Lanka to play the first of a three-Test rubber against Australia, starting in Colombo on October 3. West Indies, who like Pakistan have just finished playing in the ICC Champions Trophy event, are due to start a tour of India in a few days' time.

The practice match, in which each team is allowed to bat only 11 players but 12 can bowl and field, started on a sensational note yesterday when the Pakistanis' skipper Waqar Younis had West Indians opener Chris Gayle lbw without scoring on the first ball.

The team from the Caribbean then, however, consolidated and there were useful contributions from most players right down the order. The left-handed Shivnarine Chanderpaul, having come in with the score at 38 for two, survived till the end making an unbeaten 83 off 177 balls with 13 fours.

Ramnaresh Sarwan hit 47 off 74 deliveries with seven boundaries, wicket-keeper Ridley Jacobs made a run-a-ball 24 and off-spinner Gareth Breese sparkled with 33 off 36 balls that included three fours.

Chanderpaul shared a sixth-wicket stand of 53 with Ryan Hinds and one of 52 for the seventh wicket with Daren Ganga. Breese helped him add 46 runs for the ninth wicket in 69 balls.

Youngster Hasan Raza is keeping wicket in this match, and he acquited himself well by executing a stumping and then making a catch later in the innings.
