Barry Richards to coach academy trainees in
Pakistan
SHARJAH: The former South African batting
great Barry Richards has agreed to a short coaching stint in
Pakistan to work with the national academy trainees this summer.
Rameez Raja, a senior member of the Pakistan Cricket Board told
newsmen on Sunday that he had spoken to Richards, who had agreed to
work with the academy trainees this summer.
"He has free time in June and July and his assignment could comprise
two visits to Pakistan. But he is also looking forward to having a
look at the Pakistan cricket structure and its national academy
programme for youngsters," said Raja.
Barry Richards, considered as one of the finest opening batsman of
his generation, is in Sharjah as a commentator for Ten Sports and
shares an excellent rapport with Rameez who is also on the
commentary team.
Rameez felt that Barry Richard's visit would be a boost for the
academy youngsters who start training in the summer as his knowledge
of the game and batting skills was outstanding. "Given that we have
shortage of quality openers in Pakistan, Richards can give valuable
tips to our young and potential openers."
The PCB in the past has also had England opener Geoffery Boycott and
West Indian Clive Lloyd visiting Pakistan and work with the young
players.
It also hired a fielding coach, Julian Fountain from England, for
the same purpose. Meanwhile back home there are indications that
former Pakistan skipper and coach, Javed Miandad might eventually be
asked to take over the national academy project as he has shown
interest in working with the youngsters and groom them.
Miandad, who was in Sharjah for the present tournament, when
approached for his comments said he could not say anything until the
Pakistan board made an official announcement itself.
