We'll stick to combination that is working: Wright

CHENNAI: The Indian team management is not willing to relieve vice-captain Rahul Dravid of the wicket keeping responsibility in one-dayers with coach John Wright on Saturday making it clear that they would stick to the combination that was working.

Wright said young Parthiv Patel was an "outstanding prospect" and would be given the opportunity when he was ready for the challenge.

"When a combination is working one will stick to that combination," Wright told reporters on the sidelines of the conditioning camp for Asia Cup probables.

"Parthiv had not been there in the playing eleven for one-day matches since it will be almost a luxury. But he is working on that and he would be ready for that challenge any time," he said.

Wright's comments come two days after captain Sourav Ganguly told NDTV that Dravid would continue to double up as a wicket keeper as there was no need to meddle with the combination that was delivering the results.

The former New Zealand captain said once a team is picked for a tour, it is left to the captain, vice-captain and the coach to decide a playing eleven and work towards a winning combination

"We have two players who have done outstanding jobs. Dravid has done an outstanding job, as also, Parthiv, who had not got much of opportunities."

"Parthiv is part of the set up. He is developing well. He had an outstanding season last year and proved well. He is getting better and better with his batting," he said.

Asked whether the young wicket keeper lacked anything, the coach said "he does not lack anyhing. He is an outstanding prospect. Any country would love to give their hand to this young lad. Still, he is only 19. He has an average of 60 or 70 with the bat during the last season."

"He is going to be the right player for India," he added.

Wright said the emergence of Tamil Nadu boy Dinesh Karthik has brought about a healthy competition for the wicket-keeping slot which is a good sign for Indian cricket.

"Obviously, there is lot of competition and Dinesh Karthik, is also challenging Parthiv," he said.

"But, Parthiv is one of the great prospect for Indian cricket and world cricket. I had never had any changed opinion on him," he added.
