Team determined to win Asia
Cup: Ganguly
KOLKATA: Determined to replicate the country's recent successes in
the coming Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, Indian cricket skipper Sourav
Ganguly said on Monday that his team was all keyed up to return
triumphant from the island nation.
"The Asia Cup has eluded us for the last the two years. My boys are
all keyed up. We would like to win it this time," Ganguly told
newspersons as he prepared to leave for Chennai en-route Sri Lanka.
Ganguly, who had a practice session at the Eden Gardens during the
day, said that the tips from legendary opening batsman Geoff Boycott
had greatly benefited the team at the conditioning camp in Chennai
earlier this month.
"I have always enjoyed a good chemistry with him. At Chennai, he
gave lot of tips not only to me, but individually to all the
batsmen. The valuable advice form someone as experienced as him will
greatly benefit the boys," he said.
On the goals set by the Indians for the coming season, Ganguly said
the team should set bigger targets and endeavour to achieve them.
"We should not rest on past laurels. We must plan up well, set
bigger targets and try to achieve them," he said.
Ganguly rubbished claims of his critics about his lacklustre
performance, saying "One only has to look at the scoreboard to see
how may runs I've scored. But yes, I need to improve."
Asked whether he was in favour of a two-tier system in one-day
International in the context of the inclusion of minnows like United
Arab Emirates and Hong Kong in the Asia Cup beginning from July 16,
Ganguly said: "As a captain, I do feel that way. But I'll not
propose anything. It is a matter for the ICC. And the ICC will have
the final say on this."
Ganguly refused to comment on the delay in implementing the graded
payment system for the cricketers.
"I have no idea when things will finally work out," he added.
