Pakistan not seeking
‘revenge’: Inzamam
COLOMBO: Pakistan cricket captain Inzamam-ul-Haq on Tuesday said his
side was not seeking any revenge against India for its humiliating
home series defeat, but warned the Indians to be ready for a tough
fight when they meet in the Asia Cup.
"We don't use words like revenge and we are not seeking one here,"
the hard-hitting batsman told reporters after arriving in Colombo to
take part in the six-nation Asia Cup, which includes Islamabad's
arch rival, India.
Six teams - Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, the United Arab
Emirates and Hong Kong - will contest the Asia Cup between July 16
and Aug 1.
"We are here to play good cricket and we are going to play our best
and win," Inzamam said.
India, in its first full tour of Pakistan in 14 years, won the
limited-overs series 3-2 and the Test series 2-1 in April against
its arch-rival.
The series defeats cost coach Javed Miandad his job. The former Test
captain was fired and replaced by Bob Woolmer as Pakistan's national
coach. The Asia Cup will be Woolmer's first tournament in charge of
Pakistan.
The main attraction in the Pakistani team was fast bowler Shoaib
Akhtar, whose coming to Sri Lanka was not certain. Akhtar joined the
Pakistani training camp on July 5 and went through a strenuous
fitness test.
Under orders from team management, Akhtar did not speak to reporters
after arriving at his hotel.
"We want all to concentrate on the game and nothing else," Rashed
said, but did not elaborate.
Opening batsman Imran Nazir also returned to the national squad
after a nine-month break dating to the South African tour of
Pakistan in October 2004.
Vice captain Yousuf Youhana, Younis Khan, skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq and
wicketkeeper-batsman Moin Khan form a strong middle-order batting
lineup, while paceman Shabbir Ahmed and Mohammad Sami will
supplement Akhtar in the pace department. Abdul Razzaq and Shoaib
Malik are the two all-rounders.
