PCB asks players to be cautious against betting mafia

LAHORE: Pakistan cricketers have been warned by their Board to be very cautious of attempts by the illegal betting mafia, who may employ fancy fixing methods to influence the outcome of matches in the Asia Cup.

The players, before leaving for Sri Lanka on Tuesday, were issued a note of caution by the Pakistan Cricket Board following advice and feedback from the Anti-Corruption Unit of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in London, PCB chief Shaharyar Khan said.

"During a meeting in London with ACU officials including Paul Condon, we were told that while the instances of the betting mafia fixing full matches has come to a halt but these people are now devising new methods of fancy and flash fixing to ifluence results of matches," Shaharyar said.

"The ACU told us to caution our players to be very aware of such attempts from the ilegal betting mafia operating in Pakistan, India, Dubai and even other countries," the PCB chief was quoted as saying on Thursday.

Shaharyar said the positive outcome of the meeting was that the ACU had confirmed that the recent home series with India was completely clean.

"According to them they have managed to discourage and prevent the ilegal betting mafia from fixing matches with some concrete steps. And the recent series was totally clean.

"But they have warned us that because of the lucrative money involved in this illegal business, the bookmakers and punters are now employing fancy and flsh fixing methods to corrupt players," he added.
