Azhar stresses on importance of fitness

DAMBULLA: Former captain Mohammad Azharuddin says although the current Indian team follows the fitness routine religiously, it is not as "fitness conscious" as its counterparts from England or Australia.

Azharuddin, who was popular in his playing days for his athleticism in the field, says the Indians are naturally skilled and creative but could draw from the fitness culture of white teams.

In fact, he feels the standards of modern cricket could get a lift if specific features of cricket cultures of different regions are inter-exchanged.

"We all know how much the present Indian team has benefited from the likes of John Wright," Azhar told a television commentary team covering the Asia Cup cricket tournament.

"Similarly, it is the Indian coaches who should be coaching the batsmen of, say teams like England. Teams such as England and New Zealand should be taking help from Indian hands as the latter play a more aggressive and creative brand of cricket."

Azhar could not help but think about his playing days when it was virtually he who used to do all the running.

"In a way I was ahead of my time on issues of fitness. I remember I was looked at strangely when I stressed on fitness," said Azhar who does not have an extra ounce of fat on his lean frame.
