Zaheer ruled out of today's match

COLOMBO: India's pace spearhead Zaheer Khan has been ruled out of Wednesday's match against Bangladesh due to a thigh injury, but the speedster is still in with a chance of playing in the later stages of the Asia Cup, coach John Wright said on Tuesday.

Zaheer bowled nine overs against Sri Lanka on Sunday before retiring to the dressing room and when the Indians chased 282 under lights, he came out with a runner.

"He's not fit for tomorrow and we have got to look at the whole situation regarding the two remaining games," Wright said.

"Andrew Leipus (physio) is very happy with the progress he has made in the last 36 hours. From what Andrew has intimated me is that he has made very good progress.

"From the cricket point of view, we want the situation to be sorted out because we want to be picking from a full squad," he said.

Wright said Zaheer suffered from a tweaked quadricep muscle in his left leg and it was not the recurrence of the same injury which left him grounded for close to six months last season.

"He also got it while he was fielding and not while he was bowling. From what I understand, it's not exactly the same injury because it was not while he was bowling.

"Andrew is still monitoring it and we treat it as a serious situation."

The coach said Zaheer was very upset with the injury and was working hard to get over it.

"Zaheer was very upset as he is trying very hard to continually improve on his leg injuries. He bowled well in the first match and it was as good as I had seen him bowl for 12 months. It's unfortunate what has happened."

Wright, who expressed disappointment at India's loss to Sri Lanka, called on his players to show some urgency in their approach in the remainder of the Asia Cup.

"It was a wake up call the other night. I was pretty disappointed. There was no urgency or intensity in our performance. You can have win or losses. But I was not happy with the intensity.

"But those things have happened to us earlier. If you remember the World Cup, we had those losses against Australia. Against Pakistan, we had that big fright against Pakistan A in a warm up match where they clouted us all over the field.

"It was a good wake up call. The good thing is that every team in this competition is going on an equal footing. We are in the same situation as Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

"We will start from the scratch. I am seeking a very hungry performance tomorrow."
