in draw
COLOMBO: South Africa captain Graeme Smith warmed up for the first
Test against Sri Lanka next week with 85 not out against a Board
President’s XI on Sunday as the three-day match ended in a draw.
Smith spent valuable time in the middle, facing 112 balls and
hitting 12 boundaries, as South Africa settled for batting practice
after being set a stiff 312-run victory target in a maximum 45 overs.
Jacques Kallis also made good use of his last opportunity to
acclimatise to Sri Lanka’s slow, turning pitches with 25 from 42
balls before both captains settled for a draw.
Earlier, the President’s XI, resuming on 123 for one, piled up 286
for three in 73 overs before declaring as South Africa, rotating 14
players in the field, used nine bowlers.
Opener Michael Vandort top-scored 129, including 19 fours and one
six, sharing a 187-run partnership for the second wicket with Russel
Arnold (83). Romesh Kaluwitharana, Sri Lanka’s wicketkeeper for the
two-Test series, scored his second fifty of the match, speeding to
54 not out from 69 balls. The first Test starts in Galle on August
1.
