Muralitharan to undergo surgery

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka's star spinner and the world's highest Test wicket taker, Muttiah Muralitharan, will leave for Australia on Thursday to undergo surgery for a shoulder injury, a cricket official said.

"He will have to undergo surgery," Sri Lanka Cricket spokesman Ray Illangakoon said. "But at this stage we don't know how serious it would be. An Australian doctor will see him on Saturday."

Muralitharan flies out to Melbourne later on Thursday, Illangakoon said adding that he would be treated by David Young, a doctor the authorities in Sri Lanka had been consulting on the bowler's condition.

The 32-year-old who holds the world Test bowling record of 532 wickets, struggled to get his side the breakthroughs expected of him in last week's opening Test against South Africa in Galle.

He was forced to miss the second Test against South Africa on Wednesday.

There was fluid accumulation in his bowling shoulder for which tests were initially carried out here.

"He was bowling in some sort of pain in Galle and we did not want to take a chance here and aggravate his injury," team manager Ajith Jayasekara said on Wednesday.

Sri Lanka's forthcoming engagements include a five-match one-day series against South Africa after the ongoing Test, the ICC Champions Trophy in England next month and a Test tour of Pakistan in October.

"His participation in these tournaments will depend on medical advice," Illangakoon said.
