Indian cricket fans to get visas in border city

NEW DELHI: Pakistan will issue visas to Indian cricket fans at the northern Indian border city of Amritsar, allowing them to follow their national team’s first test tour of its hostile neighbor in 14 years, the foreign ministry said Friday.

"We have conveyed to Pakistan today our approval of the proposal for a visa camp in Amritsar to facilitate people from that region who wish to go to Pakistan to watch cricket matches," External Affairs Ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna told reporters.

The eastern Pakistani city of Lahore is nearly 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Amritsar, in India’s Punjab province. People can cross by foot, bus or train. Pakistan has announced it will issue visas to 8,000 Indian cricket fans.

The Indian cricket team will play five one-day matches in Pakistan from March 13-24 and three test matches from March 28-April 18. Hundreds of people have been visiting the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi since early this week with visa requests.
