Inzamam and Farhat put Pakistan on top
LAHORE: Captain Inzamam-ul-Haq struck his 19th Test century
and opener Imran Farhat his second as Pakistan took control of their
second Test against India.
Inzamam cracked 14 boundaries in his undefeated 118 and Farhat (101)
also hit 14 as Pakistan ended the second day at 355 for three in
their first innings, 68 ahead.
The Pakistan skipper shared in two century partnerships, 110 for the
third wicket with Farhat and an unbroken 150 for the fourth with
Youhana, who was on 62 on an increasingly friendly wicket.
But Tuesday was marred by arguments on the field between the players
for the first time this series, one of them involving Inzamam and
leg spinner Anil Kumble after the batsman had completed his hundred.
Indian captain Rahul Dravid and umpire Steve Bucknor had to step in
to settle the dispute.
"There were a few words exchanged, but it was nothing
big," Inzamam said.
"We had a few laughs and made up after the game. All this is
part of modern-day cricket."
Pakistan had resumed on 61 for one with Farhat hitting Kumble for
four in the first over and then driving left arm paceman Irfan
Pathan backward of point for another boundary.
Yasir Hameed joined in, immaculately driving Pathan on the up
through the off side.
But the 26-year-old was out for 19, edging a wide delivery from
medium pacer Ajit Agarkar to Dravid at second slip.
Agarkar was nippy in his five-over first spell, which got him one
wicket for 17. He also hit Inzamam on the helmet with a
well-directed bouncer.
The Pakistan captain shrugged off the blow, cutting Agarkar behind
square for four and then slashing him through the covers.
Farhat, fortunate to survive a close caught behind appeal on 99,
raised his 100 in 197 balls with a scampered single to mid-wicket.
But he was out soon after, edging paceman Lakshmipathy Balaji to
wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel.
Farhat, playing his 10th Test, had scored his only previous hundred
against South Africa at Faislabad last year.
Inzamam, who scored two centuries in last month's one-day series,
brought up his 50 pulling Kumble to the mid-wicket fence for his
seventh four.
Youhana was lucky to survive two close calls, an lbw appeal against
Pathan when he was on 35 and a caught-behind shout against Kumble on
38.
Inzamam raised his 100, his first against India, with a swept four
off Kumble to fine leg. He celebrated by taking off his helmet and
waving his bat to the largely deserted Gaddafi Stadium.
"We're looking for a total of between 500 and 600 so that we
don't have to bat again," he said.
"The pitch has got easier for batting, but the ball is keeping
low. There is still something in the pitch for the bowlers if they
bowl with discipline."
India lead the three-match series 1-0, having won the first Test at
Multan by an innings and 52 runs.
They are on their first full tour of Pakistan in over 14 years after
a thaw in relations between the neighbours.
