Wasim Akram criticises Pakistani pacers

LAHORE: Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram on Tuesday criticised Pakistani strike bowlers, Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Sami, saying they lacked match fitness and had disappointed the public with their listless performance during the on-going Indian tour.

"We have the best pace battery but, surprisingly, our strike bowlers lack fitness and seem to be struggling," he said in an interview to a private sports TV channel.

The champion left-armer said Akhtar was also facing problems with his run-up and that was the reason for his ineffectiveness in recent matches.

Akram also expressed surprise over the "below par performance" of Sami, who conceded 117 runs in 23 overs in the first innings of the Lahore Test.

"Sami has pace but he is not using his talent to achieve the desired results," the former skipper said, adding, "both Shoaib and Sami are not bowling a good line and length and have so far proved disastrous."

On the other hand, the former all-rounder appreciated Umar Gul's performance in the Lahore Test saying he was an impressive upcoming pace bowler.

"Gul can be more effective on English wickets as he bowls with accurate line and length", Akram said.
