Ganguly says host Pakistan faces bigger pressure for Indian tour

CALCUTTA: Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly on Sunday said the Pakistan team would face more pressure than his side in the coming weeks as host of India’s first full tour of its rival neighbor in 14 years.

"As hosts, they will definitely be under more pressure. But, its going to be competitive and the expectations from us too would be great,’’ Ganguly said as the Indian team began a three-day conditioning camp in the eastern Indian city of Calcutta before flying to the eastern-Pakistan of Lahore on March 10.

India will play the first one-day international against Pakistan in the southern port city of Karachi on March 13.

"The series is the talking point in both countries, but we can’t allow pressure to throw us off focus,’’ Ganguly told The Associated Press.

The Indian team will play a warm-up match against a Pakistan XI team on March 11 before contesting five one-day internationals and three test matches. "The point is to stick to the basics. The batsmen get the runs and the bowlers take the wickets,’’ Ganguly said.

"As captain it will be my endeavor to keep things simple and after Australia, we are a very confident team,’’ he said.

Ganguly said the tour of Pakistan might not be as challenging as the recent 1-1 drawn series against Australia. "We don’t think Pakistan will be as tough as Australia.’’
