Omar Gul to miss second Test

LAHORE : Pakistan suffered a setback on Friday when a back injury forced seamer Umar Gul out of the 17-man squad for the series-deciding third and final Test against India next week.

The 22-year-old right-arm bowler played a pivotal role in Pakistan 's nine-wicket triumph in the second Test with his man of the match performance of 5-31 in the first innings.

Wicketkeeper Moin Khan, seamer Shabbir Ahmed and all-rounder Abdul Razzaq were also ruled out from the third Test after they failed to recover from injuries. Khan had a groin problem while Ahmed is suffering from a shin injury. Razzaq has a side strain.

The 17-man squad will be trimmed down to 15 on Sunday -- two days before the Test starts at Rawalpindi .

The selectors have brought in four seamers in rookie Rao Iftikhar Anjum, Fazle Akbar, Abdul Rauf and Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan. Chief selector Wasim Bari admitted that he was concerned with the injuries to the frontline players ahead of a crucial Test.

"But I am confident that the boys will put this behind them and display the same standard of cricket that earned them victory in the second Test," Bari said in a statement.
