Why was Shoaib looking for Ganguly's room?
LAHORE: A few hours after Indian captain Sourav Ganguly raised questions about Shoaib Akhtar's bowling action in Peshawar on Thursday, the Pakistani speedster was seen looking for Ganguly's room at the Pearl Continental hotel.
Shoaib was heard asking Virender Sehwag for the Indian skipper's room number even as Sachin Tendulkar and some other teammates were shopping for Peshawari sandals and chappals in the hotel.
While Tendulkar and other Indian players negotiated with the local dealer who had brought a bagful of sandals, Shoaib eventually got Ganguly's room number and stormed off looking for it.
Considering the Indian captain is fit and fine, we assume they resolved their issues amicably.
The Pakistani speedster refused to confirm or deny the reports when contacted, nor was there any word from the Indian camp on what had been discussed between the two top players.
What we did manage to confirm is that match referee Ranjan Madugalle officially cautioned the Indian captain to stop making statements on contentious issues.
A Pakistan team source confirmed that Madugalle had spoken to the captains and managers of both sides and told them to keep a lid on giving contentious statements.
"He told Ganguly in particular that he didn't want him making statements on issues like International Cricket Council (ICC) rules or Shoaib Akhtar's bowling action and asked them to play the series in the right spirit," the source said.
Pakistan coach Javed Miandad also felt that Ganguly should avoid speaking on such issues as the ICC Code of Conduct was meant for every player and team official.
"I think he has no right to speak on Shoaib's bowling action because the ICC has cleared him. If there is a problem, there are umpires and match referees are there to take care of it," Miandad said.
