World champions Australia
crush Pakistan
NAIROBI: World champions Australia handed Pakistan a
crushing 224 run defeat in the second match of the
triangular tournament here on Friday.
It was Pakistan's lowest ever score against Australia in
one-day internationals following the previous record low
at the 1999 World Cup in England when the Aussies won by
132 runs.
Matthew Hayden's man-of-the-match innings of 146 set
Australia on their way to victory as he hit 12 fours and
six sixes to record the highest score on the Nairobi
Gymkhana ground, eclipsing Kenyan Kennedy Obuya's 144
against Bangladesh in 1997.
Pakistan captain Waqar Younis was left ruing his
decision to send Australia in, despite having won the
toss. He made the same decision against Kenya in the
opening match on Thursday which his team won by four
wickets, but against the world champions he was made to
pay.
Despite the loss of Adam Gilchrist, Hayden, who batted
until the 49th over, and Ricky Ponting put on 128 for
the second wicket as Australia eventually reached a huge
332-5 off their 50 overs as Waqar, Wasim Akram and
Shoaib Akhtar all struggled to contain the batsmen.
The absence of Waqar's injured deputy Inzamam-ul-Haq
meant Pakistan had to reshuffle their batting order and
when opener Imran was dismissed after only making one
run, they were always struggling to reach the target.
Things the got worse when both Abdur Razzaq (5) and
Shahid Afridi (0) departed in the second over while
Saeed Anwar went for three leaving Pakistan in trouble
at 13-4.
Jason Gillespie was the pick of the Australian bowlers,
taking 5-22. Saturday is a rest day, and Pakistan meets
Kenya on Sunday.
